Mindfulness Skills for Parents and Grandparents

Date: This event finished on 25 June 2020. Time: 8.00pm - 8.45pm

These 3  evening  TASTER sessions are for Parents or Grandparents. You will learn practical skills that can support you and your children in remaining steady and taking care of yourself and your family during these unprecedented times.

The sessions will be led by parents, grandparents and teachers with extensive experience of teaching mindfulness and compassion skills to adults and children.

3 stand-alone sessions, each with a different theme.

Free of charge and no need to register in advance.

The practice of mindfulness and compassion can have a positive and influential effect on health, wellbeing and resilience, as shown by scientific and medical evidence. This experiential Taster Session will help enable you to understand some of the elements of secular mindfulness, current research and the evidence base for the mindfulness and compassion programs based on Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT).

You will be introduced to a range of skills that will help you steady yourself when emotions and reactivity run high and family life seems frantic. Alongside the skills for yourself you will learn some skills you can share with your children.

Courses based on MBCT have been shown to have the potential to help you relax, improve memory, focus, problem solving, encourage self care and reduce stress.

Research on MBCT has shown that after the mindfulness training  new patterns of behaviour and neural pathways may open up and alter the density of grey matter in the brain. Most people report lasting physical and psychological benefits including an increased ability to experience calm in a stressful situation.

This Taster session will include several mindfulness practices, during which you will try bringing attention to the breath and the body. Full instructions will be provided and there will be time for discussion along with the opportunity to have a taste of how mindfulness practices work at home in between the sessions.

If you wish to develop your daily mindfulness practices further for yourself and your children, then you would be able to join the introductory, intermediate and advanced courses for parents and grandparents.
